Reduce Inflammation with Supplements
Supplements should never be taken in the place of a healthy, anti-inflammatory diet. In other words, it is delusional to think that one can live on soda, fast food, potato chips, candy, and the like, and then take supplements for protection against disease. If you harbor this view, eradicate it immediately.
Supplements are just that; they are supposed to supplement a healthy diet. Eat a healthy diet AND take a multivitamin is the recommendation of Dr. Bruce Ames, a famous toxicologist from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Ames also urges us to supplement with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce inflammation, and to reduce free radical production by taking alpha lipoic acid and acetyl-L-carnitine. Dr. Ames is an example of a modern day researcher who now embraces the use of certain supplements. Dr. Ames has written numerous scientific articles that support the use of supplements (1-4).
Basic supplements are available through deflame.com. Whether you acquire supplements through us or use another source, it is recommended that you immediately begin supplementing with certain key supplements, AND make sure your company at least has a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) from the National Products Association.
Also, be sure to read important information at deflame.com about supplement quality. We offer supplements manufactured by Anabolic Laboratories, a pharmaceutical manufacturer that applies the strict details of drug manufacturing to their supplement manufacturing, which insures that nutrient levels listed on the bottle label are definitely in the pill. This is a very unique situation, to have the opportunity to acquire supplements being made to drug specs by a pharmaceutical company.
The easiest way for some to take supplements is to buy a 1- or 2-month supply. For example, if you decide to take 5 supplements, buy 5 bottles that last for approximately 1 month each. Three weeks into the month, order 5 more bottles. Make this process a habit and supplementation will become a natural part of your life.
Keeping stress out of dietary supplementation is very important. People tend to get stressed if they think they are missing the “magic” nutrient or “magic” nutritional formula. To avoid “supplementation stress,” you must abandon the notion that a magic formula exists. In fact, most magic formulas are just a conglomeration of numerous and varied nutrients in potencies too low to have much of an effect. For example, it is essentially useless to place coenzyme Q10, alpha-lipoic acid, and acetyl-L-carnitine in a specialty formula. They act as “window dressings,” to “fancy up” a specialty formula and drive up the price. In fact, each of these nutrients needs to be taken individually so as to achieve the commonly recommended levels.
So do not be fooled by magic tales when it comes to diet and supplementation. There is no magic – if you eat an anti-inflammatory diet that is supported by anti-inflammatory supplements, then you are doing all you can from a nutritional perspective to reduce the expression of an inflammatory disease. As mentioned in the wellness section at deflame.com, additional key factors include appropriate exercise, adequate sleep, choosing healthy relationships, and having an occupation you generally enjoy.
We do offer several supplements at deflame.com for your convenience, and our goal is to keep dietary supplementation straightforward and simple. Nutrient/herb and disease interactions
According to the available data, there are no contraindications to use of the supplements offered at deflame.com. In other words, as nearly all diseases are caused or promoted by inflammation, it is appropriate to follow an anti-inflammatory diet and use supplements that support the anti-inflammatory diet.
The only exception may be magnesium supplementation in patients with an established tumor. The data is not conclusive regarding this relationship, so check with your physician.
Nutrient/herb and drug interactions
There are far too many drugs in use to be sure about every possible nutrient/herb-drug interaction. Click here for a review article that discusses potential interactions. Several books are available on this subject and the following website may be your most useful resource regarding this topic: http://www.medlineplus.gov/
The main interaction concern we have is for those patients taking powerful blood thinners, such as Coumadin, also called warfarin. The concern is due to the fact that the anti-inflammatory approach to diet and supplementation will naturally thin the blood, which is a healthy thing to do. However, when patients are taking powerful blood thinners, the additive effect of the drugs plus diet and supplementation can be very dangerous.
For those taking Coumadin (or other blood thinning agents), you can still deflame with nutrition; HOWEVER, it is very important to FIRST alert your physician about your intentions, so that your Coumadin levels and pro-thrombin time can be appropriately monitored. Your physician may also wish for you to modify your diet and supplements.
