Back Pain
100% Pain Free!!
I am a fit, male, 37 year old restaurateur active in weightlifting and Aikido. In May 2006, I seriously strained ligaments and tendons in my low back while I was attempting to rearrange kegs of beer in an over crowded cooler. There was no pain after the initial click in my back, but I awoke in extreme pain with my back in total spasm at 3AM the following morning. My VERY active lifestyle came to a screeching halt. I could not remain in a set position for more than 15 minutes before pain would cause me to rotate from sitting to standing to lying down. Sleep was only possible on the floor and my fulfilling sex life was now just a memory.
After months of visits to the inept medical center that workman’s comp. sent me to, and several specialists, I was getting frustrated and depressed. Becoming an object for diagnostic testing became my new hobby. I was prescribed medicine after medicine, but those that were effective to control the pain retarded my ability to concentrate and made me nauseous. The steroid-based anti-inflammatories caused my hunger to increase. I became a glutton, as food was one of the few pleasures I could still enjoy. I went from a fit 185lbs to a flabby 210lbs and my waist size went from 34" to a 40”.
After 5 months of this torture, I was told by my orthopedist that the majority of back pain was enigmatic and that western medicine just doesn’t know much about the underlying causes of back pain. I was told to begin to accept that this may be my new “norm of life”. With the knowledge I gained as a short term medical student years ago, I knew this was not true and recalling my previously fit body, I refused to accept this notion.
At the behest of a friend, I sought out chiropractic care and met with noticeable success. Months of adjustments, traction, ultrasound & heat therapy brought me 50% relief. Unfortunately, the benefit of chiropractic care leveled off & my frustrations were once again mounting. I was just tired of being forced into playing the role of a patient.
It was not until my chiropractor turned me onto the concept of deflaming and the effect diet has on chronic pain that my life began to return to normal. I began to look at food not as a source of comfort, but rather as either increasing or decreasing my physical pain. It was not a question of whether I would stick to the deflaming guidelines or suffer from missing certain tastes or food groups I had known my whole life. I was empowered to battle my chronic pain with the simple choice of what I ate. Interestingly, it was not difficult replacing pro-inflammatory foods with anti-inflammatory foods and I do not miss the taste of the inflammatory foods I regularly consumed.
With renewed vigor, off to war I went! I learned all I could regarding the deflaming process and adjusted my food intake to maximize the deflaming effect on my body. The time I spent conversing with Dr. Seaman was as encouraging as informative. His down to earth approach of educating me without complicated jargon was appreciated. Best of all.... IT REALLY WORKED!!! My pain noticeably lessened within a week. Within a month, I was able to return slowly to the martial art I loved. Returning to the gym came a couple of weeks later. My weight also dropped from the 210 pounds I had gained to 165 pounds. After I returned to a regular schedule of weightlifting and martial arts, I was once again a fit 185 pounds.
It has now been some time since I have felt an ache or pain in my back and the intensity of the pain is hard to remember. I feel more fit than before I injured my back and I am able to take break falls in Aikido class 5 feet off the ground once again.
I attribute the elimination of my chronic back pain to deflaming and the knowledge I gained from Dr. Seaman. The deflaming lifestyle literally gave me my life back. I went from being a patient to feeling GREAT again! I have turned others onto the deflaming path, but I will let them tell their own stories.
